Aoba Ward is located at the northern part of Yokohama City and there are more than 4000 residents from overseas countries now.
Yokohama City opened the first international lounge in 1989 to realize the community in which both Japanese and foreigners can learn and understand the cultures of each other and live rich lives.
The operation of the lounge was delegated to the steering committee of volunteer residents. Various events have been held to enhance international exchange/ understanding and to support people from foreign countries.
As of January 2014, the operation was transferred to NPO Yokohama Aoba International Exchange Society.
